PROJECT REFERENCE A-6: STONE PILLARS & GATES

Stone pillars and gates are an important feature of the built heritage of the Faughan Valley. In terms of the need and demand for the stone pillars and gates element of the project, the North Sperrins Area Based Strategy 1997-2001 (DARD) highlighted reinstatement of traditional stone pillars, gates and field boundaries as being a priority issue. The Northern Ireland Countryside Survey 2000 (University of Ulster) also highlighted the ongoing loss of these types of structures. The Landscape Partnership Scheme will therefore encourage landowners to restore stone walls and erect traditional gates.
