Project Reference B-4 : Adopt a Stream Project

The Adopt-A-Stream Programme is a programme devised by The Loughs Agency in partnership with the Faughan Valley Landscape Partnership Board.  The programme has been devised in order to promote the importance of protecting natural resources by encouraging hands on education and personal involvement.  It provides an opportunity for groups to get together to tidy up and look after a local stream or river.  Maintaining clean waterways for our native salmon and trout is a difficult task.  The Loughs Agency prides its self on managing one of the most successful salmon fisheries in Western Europe.

Waterway cleanup projects create valuable positive learning experiences and help the environment and local community immensely.   The success of a clean up event will depend upon the organisation and implementation of a project plan.  The Adopt a Stream Project will provide adopting groups with packs containing useful information, contacts, and checklists to help organise a clean up from beginning to end.  Groups will also be provided with litter pickers, gloves, high visibility vests and rubbish bags.  Insurance costs and transport costs will also be covered by the project. The project will target the River Faughan & Tributaries.

Loughs Agency will carry out initial research in order to identify suitable sites & liaise with landowners along the River Faughan and Tributaries.  Following a health and safety assessment sites will then be approved.  Groups will be provided with equipment and will be supervised on site by Loughs Agency staff while carrying out clean up operations.
